The Research: Copelia

The objective of this blog is to analyze the openings of movies and explain how creators use specific tools and skills to give a preview and feel of what the actual movie entails. Creators ensure their openings are able to do this because that alone helps reel in the audience and makes them want to see more. The movie I chose to analyze is Copelia. The movie comes from the website called "Watch the Titles" and focuses on an idea created by a doctor in regards to his plants that soon becomes stolen. To help me examine the opening sequences I have been given seven questions that will be answered in full sentences and understand what the creator(s) were trying to portray.

Images prioritized in the opening sequence are those of what appears to be different plants and the things inside these plants such as cells and the inside structure of the overall plants.

3. What connotations do the images carry?

Connotations that the images carry are exotic, highly developed, scientific, and complex. For example, the images are complex because they show the somewhat confusing but captivating structure of what makes up the plant.

4. How is the genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

The genre is reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset by the camerawork because of the closeups of things like the veins in the plants' leaves and the slow movement of the camera which gives the idea that the film has something to do with futuristic science and technology which is associated with science fiction.

5. How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

The film establishes an enigma from the beginning by constant fading and disappearing between plant parts leaving a mystery of what exactly is taking place within.

6. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

Strategies used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience are the use of illuminated colors in the various flowers' structures which indicate advanced technology and science. This would appeal to future scientists or individuals who want to be educated in this field.

7. How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques.

The technology has been used effectively because of the camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques' ability to bring mystery and questions into the mind of the viewers. The technology leaves the idea that science is involved but what is being done to it (good or bad) is unknown.

Title Research: The Reaping

This blog another research blog focused on how a movie's entirety can be seen within minutes of the beginning. This is done, of course, through the use of titles and images edited to fit the idea the film's creator is trying to bring across to those watching.  The movie I chose to analyze is The Reaping. The movie comes from the website called "Watch the Titles" and focuses on an event where mankind is contaminated by several plagues similar to the one in the Bible. Connotations that the images carry are sufferation, darkness, and fear.

The genre is reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset by the camerawork and music because the extreme close up shots of the bugs makes it look as if they're being examined by the viewer under an actual microscope and the music builds up the suspense of something bad happening. This shows the use of advanced technology and the race to save mankind which is found in typical sci-fi films.

5. How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

The film establishes an enigma from the beginning by the quick flashes between different factors such as when it flashes from drops of blood to cells of an insect. 

6. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

Strategies used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience are the use of dark lighting and observation to appeal to people who like the dark parts of science where things might affect society on a large scale. An example of this is the close up the flies that are going to soon affect the human race later on in the film. 

7. How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques.

The technology has been used effectively because the camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques make it clear that horrific events are going to unfold in the film based on how the titles are red which represents blood, the different creatures shown under microscope lenses. The flashes happening between the titles and the various living things reveal the concept of how quickly events are going to go bad which seems to be something the creator(s) intended on conveying to the audience. Thus, technology has been used effectively.

The connotations that the images carry are eerie and dark.

The genre is reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset by the sound effects, music and the shots. The close-up shots of body parts and the dark music makes the viewer feel tense.

5. How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

The film establishes an enigma by showing the credits on people's body parts using their veins.

6. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The strategies used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience was the music and sound effects.  The suspenseful music and and bubble sound effects gives the viewers an intense feeling, which makes it appealing.

Considering the camera angles, transitions and editing techniques, technology has been used effectively because the editing allowed the opening sequence to have the disturbing music. Technology was also used effectively because the camera angles showed close up body parts.

Title Research: Sci-Fi

The opening sequences for the film, The Terminator, contain 1 title.

2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

Images prioritized in the opening sequence are skulls, lasers, and big machines, which sets the mood for the viewer before the film.

3. What connotations do the images carry?

The connotations that the images carry are corrupt and dark.

4.  How is the genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

The genre is reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset by the sound effects, music and the props used. The music puts the viewer in a dark and gloomy mood as well as the skulls and guns shooting lasers. 

5. How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

The film establishes an enigma by showing someone running away from the machines shooting lasers. This makes the viewer mysterious as to what is happening and why it is happening.  
6. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The strategies used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience was the different camera angles and the music and sound effects. The close up shots on the skulls being crushed gives viewers a suspenseful feeling, while the dark music and shooting laser sounds gives the viewers an intense feeling, making it appealing.

Considering the camera angles, transitions and editing techniques, technology has been used effectively because the editing allowed the opening sequence to have the suspenseful music and the crazy sound effects. The camera angles also set the mood for the film, giving viewers an idea of what the movie will be like.

Title Research: Watch the Titles

continuing on with our research, the second website we will be using displays a different set of movies to watch. I am looking at this site, to give more a visual representation of what it is we will be doing for our movie opener. And how not to  make insertion of our titles. Genre Research Black Panther

As the end of the school year comes to a closing, so does all the classes and assignments. For Aicemedia, the final assignment has been started as of the new year. The Aice students have been instructed to do an opening of an original movie that we have created to be submitted to Cambridge for grading. Before we can get to that part, everything has to be planned out and done step by step to ensure the final project is done accurately. There will around 30 or more blogs to help groups or individuals plan and look back on when necessary. This blog will focus on a selected movie from the genre my group members and I choose. The movie selected is Black Panther. The movie focuses on an African American male who has to rise to the throne of Wakanda and ensure the safety of his people and the whole world in general. Although he has faced many dangers, he shows determination throughout the movie and his will to sacrifice himself for the good. The science-fiction/ fantasy film was released in 2018 and produced by Walt Disney's Marvel Studios. It became a very popular movie and made millions of dollars. The movie image is inserted.

First, camera shots, angles and movements in this motion picture include (but aren't limited to ) over the shoulder, long shot, establishing shot, medium shot, low angle, dutch angle, tracking shot, and zoom. The over the shoulder shot shows a sorrowful moment as TChalla's father slowly kills his brother who stole and gave Vibranium to an enemy of Wakanda. This shot gives a personal view and shows that there is some relationship between the characters. There is also a medium shot of two female characters, Nakia and Okoye, hugging from the relief of one another being safe. A low angle in this is W'Kabi blowing the horning to initiate a meeting for the different groups in Wakanda. This angle shows that W'Kabi must be highly ranked because the individuals to whom he was blowing the horn to is placed below him. For movement, a common shot done in this film is the tracking shot where men are riding horses quickly as they follow the Wakanda spaceship to its landing. This might have been implemented to show that something is about to be uncovered in the movie and it allows the audience to anticipate what will come the same way the horse riders are. Next, elements for the mis en scene within the movie are costumes, lighting, actors, makeup, props, and sound. The clothing choices for the people of royalty are somewhat bright garments dressed with gold jewelry. This style showed that the characters such as TChalla’s mother, was wealthy or had great influence in Wakanda. African warriors whether men or women wore skin tight armors in the production and paired it with pointy sticks that matched the outfits. The makeup in the movie in the movie goes hand in hand with the costumes such as the face paint used to indicate war ready people. Micheal B. Jordan’s character had bumps that looked like braille to show how much fighting he was involved in.  The actors in the movie portrayed their roles excellently. Thoughout the movie, TChalla did his part in leading as the ruler of Wakanda despite the adversary he faced. Lupita Nyong’o, who played Nakia the young spy for Wakanda. Nakia fulfills her role of being a caring being who will risk it for those she cares about when she helps many girls captured in the movie escape.
     Moreover, the lighting in the movie consists of a mixture of darkness with minimal light in certain scenes. An example is the scene that shows how Vibranium is decreasing quickly in Wakanda and will have a great impact on the society. During this scene the darkness gave a gloomy mood and showed me as the audience, a sense of defeat among the fictional place. However, the little light left glowing from the Vibranium showed that there was hope for the people of Wakanda. The props used in this film consisted of spaceships, guns, swords, and even horns. This help make the fighting scenes more exciting. The sound in the movie were a lot of diegetic and non diegetic. The fighting scene between two future kings of Wakanda had diegetic sound which was the water swooshing and falling in the background. Non diegetic were the sounds coming from the fake Black Panther car used. The editing done in this film were cross cutting, fade ins, match cut, reaction shot, and shot/ reverse shot. The common elements of genre in this film were advanced technology, fictional locations, and saving humanity before it’s too late. To finish this blog, something i didn’t like in regards to the elements of the genre was the fictional location. Being that this movie focuses solely on African/ African American people, I wish it used a real civilization to base the film on. On the other hand, the element of genre I appealed to was saving humanity. I often enjoy happy endings and thanks to TChalla and those who helped him figure out how to stop Vibranium from going scarce, life on Earth was restored.

Genre Research Divergent

Moreover, the movie chosen is Divergent. This is a science fiction movie released in 2014. The movie depicts a society with people separated into groups based on who they believe themselves to be. However, one girl discovers that she can't be subjected to one group because she is made up of all of them and this causes a war. Below is a photo of the movie:

In addition, the movie consists of different things that make it what it is. Camera shots and angles in this film are close-ups, medium shots, long shots, over the shoulder shot, high angles, low, and even point of view. The angles keep the audience watching, for example, the CU of the head of Beatrice (the leading actress) hooked up to the machine in the room makes viewers anticipate the thought of something bad happening to the hero. The low angle where Beatrice is repeatedly punching the punching bag with force is purposeful because it gives the idea that she is preparing to fight the war that's coming and she's doing so by training hard. Several movements in the 2014 released sci-fi are tilt, pan, zoom, bird's view, and tracking shot. The bird's view showed the large auditorium of people ready to choose the faction they believed they belonged to in society. The tracking shot allowed spectators to feel as if they were escaping with the group of fearless adolescents who didn't want to be controlled for the rest of their life. The pan movement that takes place in the gym within the film, shows people training to improve before the leaders trying to force people into groups form an army to stop any interventions that might prevent this. Besides these angles, shots, and movements, Divergent has other components such as the mise en scene.      First, the costumes within the show vary. Everyone is dressed based on who they are and what they must represent in society. The Abnegation who were selfless wore gray outfits that were somewhat oversized and very plain. This showed that they didn't care for much and were fine with being bland because they were self-denying. The Dauntless was fearless and represented this with blacking clothing that showed skin or was tight. The fact that black is often associated with bad made this easy to understand what they were trying to portray. The lighting in the show was sometimes a dark setting or one that was luminous. The dark setting in the scene of Beatrice and her lover, Tobias(a.k.a. Four), embracing each other is significant as it brings the audience to believe that the duo might be separated because of the fight among individuals in society. The well-lit scene of Tris being tested based on what she might fear is important because during the movie, I discovered she truly doesn't fear anything making it a good thing for her. It was a good thing for the leading actor because it gave her the boost of knowledge that people controlling society couldn't do as much as they thought they could.       In addition, the actors play do an important part in this film making. Leading actress, Shailene Woodley, constantly shows why she's divergent(being of all groups in society) whether she's defying the scientists who force her into being of one personality or helping selfish individuals like her brother. Her mother in the movie does a great job of being selfless which is the trait of the faction she belongs to. She fights alongside her brave daughter, but eventually takes several bullets and dies for the greater good. The makeup in the film is kept at a minimum, but there are realistic looking scars when the characters get hurt or tattoos to enhance the rebel trait of the Dauntless. The props used were guns for fighting and needles often used to inject truth serums or initiate mental testing for possible divergents. The sound in the movie mainly consists of dialogue, score, or incidental. Dialogue is plenteous because it is a movie and the characters are constantly thinking of different plans. The score in this is mainly for action scenes like when Beatrice is put to test in her mind and has to perform a numerous amount of wild tasks to survive. The incidental music identifies that thing such as fighting is going to take place or death and even bring one's heart to rapid beatings because of anxiousness. Furthermore, the editing in this film help piece together the film.  There are fade-ins, shot revere shots, and eyeline matches. In the film’s genre, common elements associated with science fiction are speculation on the future of mankind, the affect of new technology, and fictional places and societies. In conclusion, what I didn't like most about the film was that there wasn't any recognizable songs because they were mainly instrumental. However, I liked the costumes such as the Dauntless faction outfits because I love the color black and the mischievous side it brought out of the individuals.

Genre Research Avatar

1.  Camera Angles

Common CAMS seen throughout Avatar are, Wide shots, a lot of wide shots were used to mainly capture the conversations between more than two people as well as the action. Close ups, eye level, high angel to capture the island of Pandora, long shots, and point of view.

2. Common Mis- en- scene (CLAMPS)

Costumes used in Avatar were uniforms they used to fight in. Not much make up was used, considering the roles of the avatars were played by people who wore special suits that would later translate on screen as the actual Avatar. A lot of props were used throughout the movie as well as sound, I.e. the noises the guns would make. Lastly the actors were great at playing the roles of the avatars and creating emotional connections.

3. Common sound in the movie:

The common sounds in this movie were, explosions, screaming, screeches, ambient nature sounds and gunfire. There was both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds. 

4. Editing

The editing that was used was, again, the way they edited the avatars it was almost as if the actors played the role of a green screen. Other editing tools included, jump cuts, split screens, cutaways, and dissolve.

5. Elements of the Genre in the movie:

As for elements, this movie included explosions, stunts, and combat.

6. What elements of the genre did the movie have that you liked?

I really enjoyed how they portrayed the avatars in the movie. The way the utilized technology and were able to display the characters on the screen with out it looking too much of an animation.

7. What elements of the genre did not appeal to you?

The way they filmed certain scenes could have been better. I say that to this, being it is a sci-fi movie; I wanted to see a little bit more of the science aspect. While the writer/director did a good enough job the element of science fiction could've been enhanced a little more.

The common CLAMPS in the movie was the decor used in different scenes for example the spaceship. There was also different props used while the characters were in the spaceship. There was also different lighting and shadows used throughout the film as well as decor and character placement. As for costumes and makeup, the anti-hero in the movie was an alien, therefore there was costumes and makeup used to create the alien.

3. Common sound in the movie:

The common sounds in this movie were, explosions, screaming, screeches, ambient nature sounds and gunfire. There was both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds.

4. Common editing in the movie:

As for editing, there was Skip scenes, Inserts, Cutaways, Eyeline Matches, and Cross cutting.

5. Elements of the Genre in the movie:

As for elements, this movie included explosions, stunts, and combat.

6. What elements of the Genre did the movie have that you like?:

The elements of the movie that I liked was the CGI used to create the explosions and the aliens in the movie. The CGI and effects really made the movie exciting and fun to watch.

7. What elements of the Genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?:

The elements that did not appeal to me was the lack of one on one action with the characters and the antagonists.

Genre Research The Final Decision

   Our final genre we have decided to use is, science fiction. The first two minutes of our opening sequence to an original sci-fi film was based solely upon wanting to do something different. We did not want to do the basic action or thriller movie because it would be the easy way out. We want to challenge the status quo of film making for this project. The decision making was tough because we really could execute a documentary style movie really well and leave a good cliff-hanger. But we also like the idea of a mad scientist experimenting on 15 year old girls who thought they were attending a regular sleepover. In a sense the concept seems more appropriate for the project description.

The element of the genre that I don't like is how thriller movies don't include as many characters compared to different genres such as comedies or actions.

Genre Research Power point Project

 Coming into the class and not knowing what any of these terms meant was a learning experience. In this project, my group members and I researched a specific genre (dance) and made a power-point based on the different elements of it. In this short project, we were able to research and understand the most common concepts behind different genres of film.  The genre we chose kind of at random was "Dance."As showed in the pictures below, we added various elements including common lighting, camera angles, and common Mis en Scene. The research was sort of tough because, dance isn't really a common genre of film. We also included five common elements of dance: body, action, space, time and energy. We added examples of some films we have all watched underneath this drama, films like, Stop The Yard, Honey, and Dirty Dancing. At last we added the common sounds in our genre which include, Hardcore, techno, base and electric. Researching the sounds became difficult because there are more than 1 form of dance i.e. hip-hop, ballet, etc.. so music could vary from like contemporary music, to jazz, to crunk music. 

Snapped The Documentary

 So, today, January 17th, I'll focus on the top two pitches my group and I chose which one is the best pick for this project. In addition, we come to this decision by weighing out what we believe to be the pros and cons of each pitch and which pitch's flaws can be accepted over the other and also which idea is more creative to us. Charli, Amina, and I decided that the top 2 pitches for our upcoming film are the documentary on the crazy couple and the sleepover that leads to an unexpected experiment. These two ideas are more eye-catching and can leave our audience wanting to know what is going to happen next. Will the audience understand why the killer couple or friend duo did what they did? Is justice going to be served? Will the girls make it out alive? Will the scientist(s) accomplish the intended goal? Will the young girls stop things from going too far? These mind-boggling questions are every reason why these 2 films are the right options.

      Firstly, Pitch 1 is good for the assignment because it's a documentary that would include showings from over a period of time to give an understanding of the whole storyline. This helps in the time aspect of the project because the open has to be at least 2 minutes. This pitch is also a great choice because it does have the ability to leave some suspense. Viewers would be anxious to find out the motive the killers had in killing or doing whatever immoral act they committed. The storyline also has realistic expectations because it can be expected that the characters die from rotting in jail and not trying to escape to a different planet or so. On the contrary, the documentary pitch has a few flaws to it. It falls under the category of murder which is a very common opening in films in the media industry. People who are to be attracted to the film might not want something that has been seen on television numerous times despite the fact that my group and I would put our own spin on it. So, the documentary pitch on the killers wouldn't be seen as something original to our graders and maybe even our peers who will eventually review it.  Another thing with the documentary pitch is that if not planned wisely ad creatively, we can risk the possibility of boring our audience. Documentaries get uninteresting sometimes because of the fact that the people are just sitting in front of a camera talking about one topic.
      In addition, Pitch 2 which has the focal point of disappearing teens who have to figure out a way to do something before they don't make it out the lab the same. This pitch is creative which is great because one doesn't come across films with openings like that. The pitch would also be a great choice because it appeals to the current generation who is all about being seen as heroes in the eye of the mass. Teen audiences would feel the need to insert themselves into the opening alone because they desire to be the ones who defeat the people trying to experiment on them.

Starting The Film task

  Hello class, my name is Charli, and I am very excited to be starting our final project for AICE media. I don't know if you remember but I told you that I happen to be a very energetic and outgoing person. I happen to speak out for a lot of things and I come with plenty of ideas.  One thing I really enjoy abut media is, the freedom of our blogs. With that being said, we are able to pre-plan and write down all of our ideas here and once it is time to execute; we can refer back to our blog. Another thing to know about me is I am very goal oriented and want to get things done in a manor that will please me. And also appealing to others but still keeping in mind the rules that we have to follow. I contribute a lot to my group and my group also puts in a lot of effort. I will put my own personal ways of how things should be into my work and that's what makes me a great asset into my group. And lastly I will always push my group mates to be the best students in AICE media.
  I have learned a lot of information, over the first half of AICE media. The skills I've acquired include: angle positioning, editing knowledge, better production skills, and a higher media IQ. Media has taught me to think a little bit more on my feet, this can be seen when a storyboard idea doesn't quite fall through as planned. Also how to communicate with others to get something done more efficiently. With that being said, over the first semester of media I have found out that I ca actually be really good at this because I like to think of really cool ideas and then execute. The most exciting part of the film making process is editing. During our music video I believed I edited a good 75% of the film. Editing is something I love to do because there are so many col ways to add to a video just by adding effects, transitions , etc... When our final project is all said and done I will love to edit it but that is with the approval of my group members. We really create some of the most creative videos I think.
  A new term that was added to our media vocabulary, was pitch. Now in film, pitch is a Hollywood term; used to describe an idea where a film is  encapsulated in 25 words or less. Again coming up with creative ideas is out groups strong point.
Pitch #1: A documentary style opener to a movie where the stories of love birds,  takes a turn in the wrong direction. interviewing murderers of their own lovers.

Pitch #2: Taking a sci-fi approach to the project. Capturing a teenage sleepover, turn into a lab experiment for a failed mad scientist who craves for experimentation.  

Pitch #3: An outsiders point of view into a secretive family, only to find out he is a part of the family in more ways than he thinks.
